Houses in the 1930s
A scene in the 1930s America

This house may be an example of what Scout's house might look like. They mentioned that the Finch family had a house with a porch.Perhaps this picture is what it meant.

Boo Radley.
About Boo Radley.
This character here, to all the children is just merely a childhood superstition. but once Jem and Scout start to learn more about him, the myth became more realistic to them. Time and time, Boo Radley existence would become more and more real to them. Finally, it was the time where while Jem was playing with Scout and Dill, he saw a shadow past in the house and gotten frightened, ran out of the house and accidently his pants got stuck and he had to leave without it. But somehow his pants was fixed when he return to get it back from the Radley's place.
Scout is starting to think that this "myth" person is real...
Answering to "speculation'
I found the word "speculation"...
It is a conclusion,an opinion or a theory without proof or without any evidence.
So,"air of speculation" means a feeling of untruth,or a feeling that someone is accusing another.
Rebecca
Quote
I read chapter 2 and I found out a quote from page 27."She was furious, and when she was furious Calpurnia's grammar became erratic. When in tranquility, her grammar was as good as anybody's in Maycomb. Atticus said Calpurnia had more education than most coloured folks."I think this quote describes Calpunia's level of education.Labels: quotes

Answering haziqq's question~
1)Dill is somewhat a brave person. But,he is also someone people will feel curious about, probably because of the way he dresses. When asked about his father(part one chapter one,pg 8,line 21),Dill remained quiet and from here,we can see that he doesn't really want to chat about his father for some particular reason. Why I said he is brave is because in pg 9,line 3 of the novel,he came out with the idea of making Boo Radley come out of his house.
2)He dared Jem to make Boo Radley come out,as stated in pg 15 of the book.Obviously,Jem didn't want to do so and was asked 3 times by Dill if he dared to 'invite' Boo Radley out.Although Jem never declined a dare,he was too scared to even put a toe on the pathway towards Boo's house.
3)As for this queston,I am not so sure.I only knew that Atticus practiced about law and he is a lawyer.
Rebecca
I found out in wikipedia that this novel reacted more positively on white readers while the blacks readers responded less positively. This is because this book has racial injustice between the white and black people. There is a quote at chapter 1 of the book that describe about the place they live in. The weather, the town, and the people living in maycomb town."Maycomb was an old town, but it was a tired old town when i first knew it. In rainy weather the streets turned to red slop; grass grew on the sidewalks, the court-house sagged in the square. Somehow, it was hotter then; a black dog suffered on a summer's day; bony mules hitched to Hoover carts flicked flies in the sweltering shade of the like oaks on the square. Men's stiff collars wilted by nine three o'clock naps, and by nightfall were like soft tea-cakes with frostings of sweat and sweet taclum."Labels: quotes
I read chapter one and they had battles. Although I don't get the meaning of it, I think it's a battle between the author and Culpurnia. Culpurnia always asked her to do things and Culpurnia always won. They knew each other very long, ever since Jem, harper's brother was born. posted by: kailin (:

Adelaide` :D
About the book~
I checked out the meaning of the name of the book. They used "mocking bird" to symbolize innocence.Whose innocence?Erm...I think it's Jem's and Scout's innocence.Being a child, they know nothing of the world and what racism is all about."To kill a mocking bird" probably means to kill somebody or after someone who is innocent.

Character Analysis~
This is what a character tracker have to do.I found details about the characters.
1)Atticus Finch-He is the core of the novel. He is a man that can tolerate words;to tolerate is merely to put up with something.Atticus looks at everyone and he tries to understand where they come from. Then,he secretly and quietly passes on the knowledge and wisdom to his children--Jem and Scout--about taboo subjects like racism. He is also someone consistent, and knows how to remain himself. That is why he feels he is responsible to take Tom Robinson's case and defend him.
2)Scout Finch-Scout is the heroine and female lead in this story. She is very outspoken and she is not afraid to challenge people with her fists. Her characteristic is much like Atticus, calm and understanding. She doesn't stand on the black men's side or the white men's side. She is someone who is able to accept all human beings.
3)Jem-He is also trying to learn being Atticus, being able to accept every human. He is smart and intelligent but also impressionable. He is currently learning from Atticus the dark aspects of human nature but when asked questions about racism and justice,Jem often gets angry.
4)Boo Radley-Who is he?He is someone who will make Jem and Scout understand that people cannot be judged easily, just like a book cannot be judged by it's cover. No one had really seen Boo Radley, therefore, outrageous remarks and rumours were spreaded about him.
5)Calpurnia-Although she is the cook of the Finch family and she is black, she is treated like one of them and she is allowed to scold and lecture Jem and Scout if there is a need. She teaches Scout about respect and fair treatment to all human. She is like a mother to Scout and Jem.
